OMS Snowboarders are dedicated and passionate about the Sport, so therefore Jerry and I have put it upon our athletes to know a little bit more about the history of snowboarding and on the old school shredders who paved the way. We have picked one OG snowboarder and have asked each OMS snowboarder to do some research and gain a little more historical knowledge on the legends of snowboarding. Last up, the founding father of freestyle Terry Kidwell written by OMS Snowboarder Steve Thomas.
Back in 1977 when snowboarding was only allowed in a handful of mountains across the country, Terry Kidwell was revolutionizing the sport. Known for his signature round tailed snowboard, Kidwell is said to be the father of freestyle, he brought a skateboarding style all his own to the sport. Kidwell has four halfpipe world championships to his name, one of which was won in Italy. He dominated the snowboard scene from 1984 to 1987 winning every halfpipe competition he entered. Terry Kidwell is also the guitarist for the snowboard band, Hunk of Metal, and has a collectable snowboard by lib tech. Kidwell’s favorite places to ride were Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Jackson Hole, and Sierra at Tahoe. Terry Kidwell is a pioneer and a founding father of snowboarding.
