OMS and Smith Optics Know Your History: Mike Ranquet

Last season, the OMS coaching staff decided that it was time for the kids to gain some proper knowledge on the legends of our sport who bootpacked the trail for the snowboarding and made it what it is today.  We deemed it “Know your History.”  In year two, we’re collaborating with Smith Optics and have left it up to their infamous TM Nate Farrell to dish out some og’er names for our kids to research, grow to know, and to ultimately develop a deeper and richer appreciation for the sport they all love. Second up, Mike Ranquet written by OMS Snowboarder Austin Hawkes (17')

Mike Ranquet was rad dude on and off snow! You can pretty much call him a rebel. He was born August 23, 1970 in Renton, Washington. He grew up in a safe environment around him in a safe neighborhood.  His dad was a lawyer and was always trying to guide him in the right direction in life but Mike had a true passion for shredding. Mike said in his own words “if you asked my parents what I do for a living they couldn’t tell you.” Mike just did his own thing and lived to snowboard and did not care about anything else. Mike was also a awesome skater he loved doing crazy things such as jumping over his parents cars off a launch ramp. He didn’t care about the rich life and as far as he knew, all he wanted out of life was to skate and snowboard everyday of his life- nothing else.

Mike’s accomplishments were that he made it onto the movies Road kill, Creatures of Habit, VBS TV series, and Powder + Rails. Mikes got is style from skateboarding, he road the snow like he was on a skateboard. He was also known for his butter tricks. Mike road everything from freestyle to free riding. Mike road for Lamar snowboards and G&S. He was part of what snowboarding is today. Influencing the sport with style and to let your personality show and to not care what others think. Mike recently received the Legend awards at the 12th annual Transworld Riders' Pool Awards show, joining the ranks of snowboarding's most influential people.
He was just one of those die hard snowboarders and skaters and will always have a name in the snowboarding world.
